New Play Dramaturgy Bootcamp at Chicago Dramatists

I will be teaching a special two-day intensive class on New Play Dramaturgy at Chicago Dramatists coming up in June.

This is geared towards all new play professionals: playwrights who want to be able to give and receive better feedback in seminars and writers groups, dramaturgs and directors who want to have more effective conversations with playwrights, and actors/designers/others who want deeper insight into the dramaturgical process.

We will look at three different methodologies for talking about new work and practice implementing these strategies. For details and registration click here

The Surest Poison in the First Light Festival

The Surest Poison, commissioned by Ensemble Studio Theatre and the Sloan Foundation, will receive a staged reading on Tuesday, February 27 as part of EST’s First Light Festival. This annual festival features plays about science and technology. The reading is free and open to the public, and you can reserve your spot by clicking here.

About The Surest Poison (in 25 words!):

Murder by cyanide. Government-poisoned liquor. A flapper named Lipstick and a toxicologist named Gettler are New York’s best hope in this Prohibition-era caper.

Another Jungle named Honorable Mention for the Relentless Award

Another Jungle received an Honorable Mention for the 2017 Relentless Award. From the American Playwriting Foundation:

Each year The American Playwriting Foundation receives roughly 1,000-2,000 submissions, in the three years since its inception. Narrowing down to just 8 top plays is an incredibly difficult, and sometimes heart breaking process. Since last year, we have featured a select additional group of scripts, that were given special recognition by our Subcommittee.

Another Jungle is one of just eleven Honorable Mentions. For more about the American Playwriting Foundation and the Relentless Award (which was established in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman), you can visit their site.

Strange Heart Beating in Minneapolis

On Saturday, January 20, Strange Heart Beating will launch a new reading series at the Center for Performing Arts in Minneapolis. The ReClaim series uses plays to initiate conversations about social justice. The reading will be followed by small group conversations with facilitators from the Dispute Resolution Center of MN.

From CPFA’s website: “The ReClaim series supports artists who engage fiercely with the complex and contradictory nature of the human experience. We support audiences who yearn for greater personal engagement between works of art and the daily life of our community. With a focus on artists that reckon with social justice on a human scale, the post-presentation discussions are facilitated by skilled leaders in the creation of art and the seeking of justice.”

The reading begins at 7:30pm; admission is free. For more, visit CPFA’s site here.
